Nontraditional Decorating Ideas for the Fourth of July
Think outside the flag, and the traditional red,
white and blue to add a hint of U.S.A. spirit to your decorating.
1. The saying goes "As American as apple pie, so why not
decorate with it? Use pie motifs on throw pillows and in the kitchen.
You can also make a decorative apple pie out of salt dough and display
it as a centerpiece or on a sunny windowsill.
2. Baseball is America's favorite pastime and will always
represent the U.S. Decorate with vintage baseball items such as
uniforms, gloves, hats, and bats. Have a display of baseball cards, or
use baseball sayings such as "Three strikes you're out" on decorative
signs.
3. Military buttons, gear and medals are another great way
to decorate for the holiday. What better way to celebrate the nations
birthday than by honoring the people who have fought for the country.
Shadow boxes work great for these types of displays, and old photos of
soldiers will also add to the décor.
4. Decorate with stars, even if they are not red, white and
blue. Vintage hues such as browns and deep maroons are a good way to
decorate.
5. Decorate with George Washington. Hang a portrait of
George Washington, display a three-pointed hat, place a book about the
first president on a living room coffee table, frame a copy of his
signature, or even frame a dollar bill, for just a hint of patriotic
spirit.
6. Postage stamps have always displayed patriotic symbols.
Find these stamps and display them on the wall or even have some of
the more interesting ones enlarged. Create throw pillows and place
mats that look like postage stamps too.
7. The Declaration of Independence and other famous
addresses from U.S. history area also a good way to decorate. Using
addresses or quotes from defining moments in U.S. history such as the
Martin Luther King, "I Have a Dream" speech, the Gettysburg address,
the Bill of Rights, and the announcement of the U.S. to enter World
War II, will add an interesting flair to your decorations. Get
enlarged, vintage looking versions or create your own. Display them in
various ways such as on the wall, in a table centerpiece, or on a
table. You may also want to display pictures or other items related to
the event or speech.
8. Decorate with images and items from American Folklore
such as Paul Bunyan, Johnny Appleseed, and Yankee Doodle.
