Spangled Checkerboard
This easy to make craft is not only a fun decoration, but also fun
to play with.

What you will need: 1. 32 one-inch wooden stars
2. Red, white and blue acrylic paint
3. Paintbrushes
4. Ruler
5. Pencil
6. 10x10 inch frame
7. Thick piece of cardboard or artist canvas to fit in the frame
Directions:
1. Begin by putting the cardboard or canvas inside the frame and
using the pencil to draw on the canvas following the frame. This will
let you know what part of the canvas shows and what is hidden by the
frame.
2. Using the ruler and pencil to draw lines one inch apart. Put in
the lines both horizontally and vertically so that when you are done
you have 64 one-inch squares on the canvas.
3. Paint the squares in a checker pattern using red and blue.
4. Put the cardboard or canvas in the frame. If the frame came with
a glass remove it and save for some other craft project.
5. Paint all of the wooden stars white.
6. On half of the stars paint a smaller red star.
7. Allow everything time to dry. Now your patriotic checkerboard
is complete, and you can display it or put it out where the kids can
play with it.
